This is my dessert version of iced coffee and it’s all vegan! Coffee milkshake is super easy to make vegan and with high-quality ingredients you can’t taste the difference between a vegan and dairy version. This summer treat is ready in 10 minutes!
How to make coffee milkshake
You only need three main ingredients + extras for flavor if you want.
For a coffee milkshake I love to use the most delicious dark roasted coffee, which is cooled or room temperature. I use coffee from Paulig (a Finnish brand) and their dark roasted Cafe Parisienne, which is perfect for lattes and ice coffees.
You can also use cold brew coffee, if you have the time to make it! Cookie and Kate has the perfect cold brew recipe.
I’m using vegan vanilla ice cream from the brand Oatly. It’s an oat-based ice cream, sweet, and lovely vanilla flavor. But you can use any ice cream you like, just as long as the flavor is good with coffee: chocolate, caramel, mocha. Ice cream gives the coffee milkshake sweetness and a good thick texture too.
I also recommend adding a few ice cubes to your milkshake, to keep it chilled. I often freeze plant-based milk in an ice cube tray and use these milky cubes in smoothies, shakes and ice coffees. This is what I recommend for this coffee milkshake too.
Vegan whipped cream
Coffee milkshake needs a generous whip on top! And why not some chocolate and a cherry too 🙂 We have an amazing oat-based whipping cream here, which turns incredibly fluffy when whipped. The brand is Fazer Aito, and I really hope it will be available in other countries (than Finland & Sweden) soon.
But until it is, just use any whipped cream you like. Whipped coconut cream would work here too, if you’re a fan of coconut flavor.
I like to vary things up a bit every now and then, so I use either flavored ice cream or spices in my coffee milkshake. Here are my favorites (adjust the amounts as you wish):
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp pumpkin spice or gingerbread spice (I use these spices all through the year, I love them so much!)
- 1/4 tsp ground green cardamom
- 1/2 tsp vanilla bean powder
- 1 tbsp cacao powder
- 1 tbsp vegan nutella
Coffee milkshake recipe (vegan)
one large milkshake or two small ones
- 1 1/2 cup vegan whipped cream
- 1/2 cup strong coffee
- 1 1/2 cup vegan ice cream
- Flavors if you want from the list above
- a few ice cubes or frozen plant-based milk cubes
- vegan chocolate
Blend 1/2 cup whipped cream together with the coffee and ice cream (and flavor if you want) until smooth. Pour in a glass jar (or any jar) and add ice cubes. Pipe whipped cream on top and decorate with grated chocolate and a cherry.
